I have travelled in England many times – and been to the Cotswolds region probably half a dozen times. What’s not to love repeating about those picture postcard little ancient villages boasting superbly silly names like Upper and Lower Slaughter, Stow-on-the-Wold and Chipping Campden?! But eventually, you may think, repeating such itineraries might get a little boring and bring on that feeling of “seen one half-timbered house, seen ‘em all”…
As with every region in any country however, a good local knowledge can introduce you to new experiences and our last week spent in the Cotswolds with Jones & Campbell certainly proved this to be true. For one, staying in a superb manor house amid those rolling hills, not another tourist in sight, with a personal chef to spoil you with his delicious cooking and beautiful hosts to pamper you, is a very different experience to a B&B or even at the other end of the scale, a 5 star spa retreat! Our week at the Manor House was a unique holiday that made returning to the Cotswolds an entirely fresh and unforgettable experience.
Angharad Jones and Joe Campbell-Sait are two delightful young entrepreneurs who after years of experience on the canals in France, have brought the barge concept on to land in this new venture. Just like on the barges, there is relaxation time every day, where in this case you can walk for miles in the countryside, stopping for a beer at the local village pub, swim in the heated pool, or just curl up with a book in the beautiful flower filled garden. Just like on a barge, your personal chef provides innovative and mouth watering cuisine to delight your senses three times a day. And fabulous premium wines are served, along with any mixed drinks you care to request, whenever you want them. And just like on the barge, we enjoyed unique local experiences that you cannot find travelling on your own. For example, being privately escorted through history soaked Sudeley Castle, home of Plantagenets and Tudors and final resting place of Katherine Parr (This castle does not usually offer private tours at all). Or attending a polo match at Cirencester Polo Park, often frequented by Will and Harry (yes those two!) with a cream tea and champagne provided while you sink back into comfortable outdoor chairs and listen to nearby parents discuss their son’s or daughter’s “form” as they thunder past on their 4th mount of the day! On other days we visited some of those aforementioned cute little villages, and spent a fabulous day in Bath with a very entertaining local Blue Badge guide.
Ang and Joe’s extensive experience in barging means they have not missed a thing in setting up this superb “Quintessential Cotswolds” week – not a single detail in either the service or the excursions has been overlooked. And the best thing of all was the ambience of the whole stay – from the moment we walked into the manor, it felt like home, and we relaxed and enjoyed our surroundings with such pleasure and contentment that we really did NOT want to leave!
I would highly recommend a stay with Jones & Campbell for a family group, or for a group of friends this unique sojourn would also be absolutely superb. Like the hotel barges, this is an all-inclusive week, so you can relax and enjoy the unlimited pleasures provided without putting a hand in your pocket. And of course Joe and Ang can accommodate any special requests or special occasions for your particular group. For example this would be the perfect location for a special birthday or anniversary! We can also suggest a combined tour that incorporates a week with Jones & Campbell and a week on a barge – as I write this, I am sitting in the sun on deck of the beautiful “Shannon Princess” in Ireland – more about our unique experiences with Jones & Campbell in 2019 will be coming to our website soon!
